Compulsory Basic Training
CBT certificates are valid for a two year period and if the rider has not passed his motorcycle test they must repeat CBT or in some circumstances an upgrade CBT.
Category AM 16 year old can do CBT on a 50cc geared motorcycle or a 50cc automatic scooter. When the rider turns 17 years old the CBT certificate will cover them to ride a 125cc machine while the certificate is still valid for its two year period.
Category A1 17 -19 year old can do CBT on a 125cc motorcycle or 125 automatic scooter. Anyone doing CBT on an automatic would have to repeat CBT if they wanted to change to a geared motorcycle at a later date. If at 19 years old they wanted to move up to category A2 they could do an upgrade CBT as long as their original certificate was still in force.
Category A2 19 – 21 year old can do CBT on a 500cc machine but the CBT certificate only allows them to ride a 125 motorcycle unaccompanied. To ride a bigger machine they must have a DVA approved motorcycle instructor with them. If a rider passes all tests in this category they can redo tests on a category A motorcycle after holding licence for a two year period.
Category A 24 year old can do CBT on a 600cc motorcycle but again only allowed to ride a 125cc unaccompanied. All tests would have to be completed within the two year validation period of the CBT certificate or a repeat CBT will have to be done.
